PROF. ROY SCHOEMAN TALK 26/6/2019 – we were very blessed to have a distinguished guest and speaker last night. Prof. Schoeman grew up in New York City in a conservative Jewish family and studied under the prominent rabbis of the time. He is very gifted intellectually and went on to study at MIT and also at Harvard. After his studies, he went on to teach at Harvard. At a certain point in his life, there was a divine intervention and marian intervention and had a conversion to christianity to the Catholic faith and has gone on to speak about it. He spoke about his witness testimony and about the role of Judaism and salvation history and the way Judaism and the Catholic Church are not two separate religion but essentially two phases of the same religion. In the vision he had where the ‘curtain between heaven and earth opened’ he realised that we had been created not for a brief life on earth but for eternity. Our lifetime on earth should be used to prepare us for our eternal life so rather than seeking what will make us happy while briefly on earth, we should use our life doing what is pleasing to God. When he finally found himself a Catholic, he realised that cradle Catholics do not realise that they have most of the answers in our ‘manual’ the ‘Penny Catechism’ which is unique to our faith. He also highlighted how the jews had delivered our faith to us using Romans 11 as reference. At the end of the evening, a lot of the parishioners commented that his talk was very enlightening, informative and inspiring. To know more, please go onto YouTube and listen to his 2-part talk on Judaism to Catholicism. Roy brought his 2 books and a video for sale and gladly signed them. Pictured below is one of his books and video. We hope to invite him back for another talk some time next year. His current London tour covers talks at various parishes.
